Boko Haram Kills Many Traders In Borno

Scores of traders were killed on Friday at
a village market in Borno State when a
large number of Boko Haram terrorists
attacked, security sources and witnesses
said.
Mainok in Kaga local government area,
is a town located 65km west of
Maiduguri, the state capital, which has a
weekly market that holds on Fridays.
Hundreds of people from remote and
surrounding communities visit the
market to trade their farm produce and
animals like cattle, sheep and goats.
This would be the second major attack
on the market within five months.
Boko Haram terrorists had in September
2014 attacked the market and killed at
least 36 persons.
According to Muhammed Buji, a trader
who said he was able to escape by
jumping into a fleeing vehicle to
Maiduguri, the gunmen who arrived the
town in trucks and motorcycles attacked
the market almost from all corners.
“I was lucky not to be in the middle of
the market at the time the attack began,
but many people were hit by bullets
fired by the Boko Haram insurgents. I
ducked and began to crawl until I
sighted a pickup van driver trying to
escape with his vehicle, so I took the
risk and ran to jump in to the back,
some other youngmen joined us too and
that was how we were able to escape”,
said Buji.
A police officer in Jakana, a sizeable
village 16km away from Mainok, who
spoke to journalists on phone but
wished not to be mentioned in this
report, said “we saw many traders
running into Jakana from Mainok, some
with minor injuries, and they informed
us that many people were killed. After
they had shot severally into the market,
they surrounded the market and began
to do selective killing especially of
traders that are from Jakana, they said
some of the terrorists were heard
shouting and instructing their colleagues
not to spare people from Jakana”.
The police officer also confirmed that
two military aircrafts were seen flying
towards Mainok while ground troops
stationed in Jakana had also moved in
pursuit of the terrorists who were said
to have left the market after about three
hours of operation.
“We still have not heard further update
on the situation since after soldiers here
had deployed in pursuit of terrorists ;
our soldiers here have not returned
since yesterday evening that they left,
after two choppers of the Nigeria Army
were spotted flying towards the forest
around Yobe state which was the
direction the terrorists took while leaving
Mainok”, said the police.
Boko Haram terrorists have suffered
huge loss of their members in Jakana
following their repeated failure to take
the village as police and soldiers
stationed there often enjoy the
cooperation of the locals who usually
provide them timely information once
they heard about planned attacks by the
insurgents. This gives reasons for their
anger and vendetta against the traders
from Jakana.
