Focus on safety of electorate, Army directs personnel

The Nigerian Army has ordered soldiers on
electoral duties to focus on the safety of the
electorate during Saturday’s governorship and
state Houses of Assembly elections.
It directed all formations and units to remain
vigilant and to act within the law to prevent any
attempt to endanger the lives of Nigerians
wherever they may reside.
The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col.
Sani Usman, in a statement on Friday, challenged
all Nigerian Army personnel on election duties to
discharge their duties professionally and within
the confines of the Code of Conduct for military
personnel on election duties.
Usman assured Nigerians of the military’s
continued subordination to constituted civil
authority and to protection of the constitution of
the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He also advised Nigerians to remain law-abiding
and to continue to discharge their civic
obligations of voting for the candidates of their
choice without any fear.
The Army spokesman reassured the general
public that their security is guaranteed within
the law, adding that the Army is working in
conjunction with other security agencies to
ensure safety of lives and properties of all
Nigerians before, during and after the elections.
He said, “The Nigerian Army wishes to reassure
the general public that their security is
guaranteed within the law, as it is working in
conjunction with other security agencies to
ensure safety of lives and property of all
Nigerians before, during and after elections.
“To this end, the Nigerian Army has directed all
formations and units to remain vigilant and act
within the law to prevent any attempt to
endanger the lives of Nigerians wherever they
may reside.
“Similarly, all Nigerian Army personnel on
election duties are advised to discharge their
duties professionally and within the confines of
the Code of Conduct for military personnel on
election duties.”
